Introducing the Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Limited Edition – 47MM

Panerai’s biggest announcement of 2019 was the relaunch of its Submersible series of robust, hyper-masculine dive watches as a collection of its own, separate from the parent Luminor family. Shortly after the new models’ rollout at SIHH, we covered one of the showcase limited editions of the collection, the Submersible Chrono Guillaume Néry Edition 47MM. Today, we turn our attention to another standout piece, the Submersible Mike Horn Edition.

The watch’s 47-mm-diameter case – including the telltale bridge-type crown protector device, the rotating divers’ bezel, and the specially engraved caseback — is made of EcoTitanium, a material introduced into watchmaking by Panerai and made entirely of recycled titanium. The case is water-resistant to 300 meters, and the bezel bears a newly designed dive scale. Underwater legibility is guaranteed by the use of copious amounts of green Super-LumiNova on the black dial, including on the large skeleton hands, the hour indices, and on the hands and border of the small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock. The inscriptions “Panerai Submersible” and “Automatic 300m/1000ft) are not printed on the dial but silk-screened on the domed sapphire crystal that protects it.

The “Automatic” on the dial, of course, refers to the movement inside the EcoTitanium case, Panerai’s manufacture Caliber P 9010, a self-winding movement with a bidirectional rotor, and storing a power reserve of 72 hours, or three days. It drives the central hours and small seconds as well as a small, unobtrusive date display at 3 o’clock. Like other Panerai in-house movements, it is fitted with a device for stopping the balance wheel to precisely synchronize the watch while setting it, as well as a system for quickly adjusting the hour hand forward or backward without interfering with the running of the seconds hand — a useful feature when changing time zones or in the event one needs to quickly adjust the date.

The Panerai Submersible Mike Horn Edition — named for the man considered by many to be “the world’s greatest living explorer” and a Panerai “ambassador” for more than 15 years — completes its eco-friendly ensemble with a black strap made of recycled PET materials, a material chosen to further reduce environmental impact; a second rubber strap is also included. The solid caseback is engraved with Horn’s signature and an illustration representing sea life. The watch is priced at $19,300.

Slightly cartoonish image on the caseback as underwater view should be magnified with respect to the surface view and not vice versa. Breaching Humpback Whale otherwise is a strange shape!

You’re showing the wrong watch. This is the extremely limited “experience” edition of 19 pieces. The regular production piece has green luminova and a black PET strap.
