Denim Diver: Introducing the Oris x Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five

You could be forgiven for missing it during last week’s barrage of new launches from the watch brands on the first all-online Watches & Wonders event, but independent, affordable-luxury brand Oris also had a significant product release last week: an update to its popular Divers Sixty-Five series, produced in partnership with Japanese denim maker Momotaro Jeans. Momotaro — a well-known brand in its native Japan — is distinguished by the craftsmanship of its denim, with each pair of handstitched jeans composed of fabric produced on vintage looms. The new Oris x Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five, works to channel this level of craftsmanship with a new and unique colorway within the series, accented with nods to the denim clothier.

The new model has the familiar silhouette of the recognizable 40-mm Divers Sixty-Five steel case, complete with its guardless crown and vintage-style, 60-minute diving bezel. This bezel is differentiated from others by its use of bronze, a material growing in popularity and increasingly in use by the Swiss brand. The dial of the watch has a green gradient style, with a darker outer edge giving way to a lighter interior. On the periphery is a white minute ring, while applied, bronze-colored hour markers accented with faux patina match the sword/baton, hybrid-style hands and their complementary lollipop seconds counter.

Inside the Oris x Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five is the automatic Oris 733 movement, which uses the Sellita SW 200-1 as its base and is capable of a 38-hour power reserve. The movement is the standard one used within the Divers Sixty-Five series, though the watchmaker has notably opted here to remove the mechanism’s date function, eschewing the feature for a more symmetrical, time-only display. Protecting the movement is a solid caseback engraved with Oris’ shield logo and featuring a commemorative “Oris x Momotaro” script. The watch is secured to the wrist via a blue denim strap marked with the double white stripes that serve as the signature of Momotaro Jeans.

While Oris has previously released a two-tone green-dial model, the Momotaro special edition differs from it in several ways that makes the new model’s design both familiar and elevated. The largest distinctions are seen in the use of a gradient, faded dial as compared to the solid green used on previous models, while the more subtle differences include the lack of a date indicator, the special signed caseback, and of course the uncommon denim strap that comes standard on the watch. Together, these features help give the watch a distinguished appearance, while at the same time the popular Divers Sixty-five silhouette and bronze bezel hint at a somewhat more rugged character, ready for hands-on work like that of producing luxury denim jeans.

The new Oris x Momotaro Divers Sixty-Five will be available for purchase starting in May 2020, priced at $2,200 and including a special Momotaro Jeans travel pouch.

What is the point of being independent if you have to sell yourself to outside entibies. Who would buy this other than a denim worker? The Japanese denim execs are wearing Rolex. I wear an Oris divers 65 daily. Oris, stay pure and protect your brand. Otherwise join Swatch group and avoid prostitution. Putting a denim strap on it doesn’t make you a rebel.

Very nice looking watch and I’m sure the fit and finish is great as I own a couple real dive watches Oris makes. But $2200.00 for a 10 ATM dive watch? At this price point I think they missed the mark even as a special edition.

So, Oris’ big introduction is a denim strap? On a diver? Ok.
