Breitling Superocean Chronograph Steelfish

Breitling watches are, of course, renowned for being go-to watches for pilots. However, the Swiss brand also produces its share of professional-grade divers’ watches. The latest of which, the Breitling Superocean Chronograph Steelfish, made its debut at Baselworld 2014 and takes the honors as this week’s Watch to Watch.

The new Breitling Superocean Chronograph Steelfish is designed for a high degree of underwater legibility, with its broad, unidirectional ratcheting bezel punctuated by black, rubber-incrusted numerals and indices. The dial also features large Arabic numerals with luminescent coating and an extra-sized day-date display in a window at 3 o’clock. The case, made of stainless steel, measures 44 mm in diameter and combines a satin-brushed finish on its surfaces with a polished finish on its sides. In keeping with its mission as a watch for serious diving, the new Superocean is water-resistant to 500 meters (1,650 feet), thanks in part to its screw-locked crown with protective reinforcements that ensure the chronograph pushers cannot be engaged until they are unlocked.

Like all Breitling watches, the Superocean Chronograph Steelfish contains a COSC-certified chronometer movement, in this case Breitling Caliber 13, with automatic winding, 25 jewels, and a speedy frequency of 28,800 vph. The chronograph function measures elapsed times to the nearest 1/4 second. The chronograph subdials are at 12 o’clock (30-minute counter) and 6 o’clock (12-hour counter) on the dial, alongside a small seconds subdial at 9 o’clock. The curved, extra-thick sapphire crystal is glareproofed on both sides. The watch is available with three dial colors, “Volcano”black (pictured), “Mariner” blue, and “Stratus” silver, and comes on a Breitling Professional steel bracelet or on Ocean Racer rubber or Pro Diver rubber straps. The steel-bracelet version (below) is priced at $6,250. (Scroll to the bottom of the photos to watch Breitling’s official product video for the Breitling Superocean Chronograph Steelfish.)

Nice watch but very over priced for a pretty much simple Valjoux 7750 movement. This would have been worthwhile with an in-house movement. At this price point I’d rather do without the chronogragh and go for an Omega 15,000 Gauss !!

It’s obviously a high quality watch and I like the appearance, shape etc with one exception. Having to remove the hour numbers to install other features makes the watch dial look unbalanced (to me).

Having said that, I like the large, highly visible day date rectangle at the 3 position. This watch, without the lapsed time capacity and dials would be my preference. How many people really use the timing mechanisms on their watches these days?
