MeisterSinger Adds a New Golden Moon to its Award-Winning Lunascope

Germany’s MeisterSinger unveiled its first astronomical timepiece, the Lunascope, in 2018, combining the Münster-based brand’s hallmark single-hand timekeeping system with a photorealistic moon-phase display. The latest version, introduced this year, uses a golden-colored moon disk on a dark blue, starry background for an even more elegantly cosmic look.

The new Lunascope is the third in the series, whose original model copped Germany’s prestigious Red Dot Design Award as well as the international iF Design Award. Like its predecessors, it has a 40-mm-diameter case made of stainless steel with a screwed exhibition caseback. The dial is dark blue with a sunburst finish, which blends seamlessly into the dark blue, starfield background of the large moon-phase aperture, whose golden yellow moon shines brightly as the dial’s star attraction.

The moon-phase requires no correction for 128 years.

Notably, the Lunascope’s moon-phase indication is hyper-accurate, requiring correction only once every 128 years; most traditional moon-phases (especially in watches at this price point) need correction every three years. Other intriguing dial details include the gold-hued, superimposed Arabic hour numerals and the golden trim around the circular date display window at 6 o’clock, and, of course, the large, single, central hand that  keeps the time on the numbered 12-hour scale.

The ETA Caliber with moon-phase module is visible through the caseback.

Inside, behind the caseback’s sapphire window, is the automatic ETA 2838 caliber, storing a 38-hour power reserve, and enhanced with a moon-phase module developed in-house by Meistersinger. The Lunascope is mounted on a cognac-colored calfskin leather strap that harmonizes attractively with the dark blue and gold tones of the dial. The price is 2,764 euros, or about $3,100.

Beautiful design but the use of only one hand is preposterous and precious. Sorry.
