Showing at WatchTime New York 2018: Omega Speedmaster Racing Chronograph

America’s largest luxury watch show, WatchTime New York, returns to Manhattan’s Gotham Hall on October 26-27 (click here for event details and to purchase tickets). As we count down to the big event, we continue to spotlight many of the new timepieces that guests will discover there. Today we turn our attention to the latest version 0f Omega’s vintage-look wrist chronograph, the Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer.

The Omega Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer “Steel on Steel”

The new “steel on steel” Omega Speedmaster Racing Master Chronometer joins the growing stable of Omega watches built to meet the criteria of the brand’s demanding Master Chronometer certification, subjected to a battery of precision, performance, and magnetic resistance tests first applied to the Globemaster model introduced in 2015.  Its dial — here in white with black details, following up the black-dialed model with orange highlights from 2017 — sports a vintage-look, motorsports-inspired minute track that first appeared on a 1968 Speedmaster. (A year or so later, after an Omega Speedmaster accompanied astronauts on the first lunar landing, the watch’s motor racing design heritage would be largely supplanted by its new identity as the “Moonwatch.”) The 44.25-mm stainless steel case is slightly thinner than those of previous models because of a revamped sapphire crystal.

The tachymeter scale bezel is made of black ceramic with white enamel numerals and indices.

Among the dial’s other notable features are its blackened, beveled arrowhead hour indices, filled with white Super-LumiNova; and its slightly expanded subdials (chronograph hours/minutes counter at 3 ‘clock, small seconds at 9 o’clock) for increased legibility. The polished black ceramic bezel uses white enamel for its tachymeter scale. Orange is used more judiciously on this model than on previous ones, found only on the tip of the central seconds hand and in the “Speedmaster” text below the Omega logo at 12 o’clock. In a window at 6 o’clock, the  date — black text on a white background — harmonizes with the dial.

The watch is mounted on a stainless steel bracelet, and a number of NATO straps are also available. The movement, on view behind a transparent sapphire caseback, is Omega’s Co-Axial Master Chronometer Caliber 9900, an automatic with a column-wheel chronograph function and a power reserve of 60 hours. Like all Master Chronometer calibers, it features a silicon balance spring and a co-axial escapement and is antimagnetic to 15,000 Gauss.
