Hands-On Debut: Longines Adds a Flyback Chronograph to the Spirit Collection

Longines’ history-steeped Spirit collection gets further expanded by a flyback chronograph. A first in the squadron of pilot’s watches that was first introduced three years ago, the Longines Spirit Flyback comes in a 42-mm and 100-meter water-resistant stainless steel case and is available with a black or blue sunray dial. Distinguished by a clean style, it features bronze-shaded hands and numerals, coated with Super-LumiNova, for perfect legibility at night. As is crucial for a pilot’s watch, the dial is framed by a unidirectional bezel. Luminescent markers on the color-coordinated inserts further enhance the readability in the dark.

Resistant to magnetism thanks to a silicon balance spring, the caliber offers a power reserve of 68 hours and a COSC chronometer certificate. The transparent case back reveals many of its details, including a personalized rotor engraved with the globe representing the Longines Spirit collection and the name “Longines Flyback.”

An in-house movement and very attractive and easy-to-read dial almost puts this one on my list. For a pilot’s watch, however, the case diameter seems a tad small. The blue iteration rocks. The black is sweet too.
