New at JCK 2014: Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Rainbow

Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Rainbow Zenith has had a busy 2014, introducing new watches both at Baselworld and during the Geneva shows. It released yet another at the JCK watch and jewelry trade show in Las Vegas: the Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback rainbow, a timepiece inspired by a military watch Zenith once created for the French Air Force. The first Zenith Rainbow Flyback watch debuted in 1997, commissioned by the French Ministry of Defence. The watch was developed to maintian precision under extreme conditions, including violent accelerations from 9 to 11 Gs as well as extreme variations in temperature and magnetic fields. The modern version uses Zenith’s heralded El Primero 405 B chronograph movement, with automatic winding and a super-fast frequency of 36,600 vph, enabling the chronograph to record elapsed times to 1/10 second. The added flyback function is designed to be useful for aviators, allowing them to start, stop, and restart the stopwatch by pressing on a single pusher. The watch also has a date display and a telemeter scale.

The case is stainless steel, 45 mm in diameter, and features a rotating bezel with the telemeter scale on an aluminum ring. The sapphire crystal is domed, approximating the shape of the astrodome on a plane’s fuselage to aid  in navigation. The red used for the bezel’s first 20 minute markings and the central chronograph sweep seconds hand, along with the green, white, blue and yellow sectors of the 30-minute chronograph minutes counter at 3 o’cl0ck (all colors of the French Air Force) combine to lend the watch its “Rainbow” moniker. The hour markers are coated with white Super-LumiNova, making them extra-legible against the black dial. The chronograph 12-hour counter is at 12 o’clock, and small seconds are at 9 o’clock.

The Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback comes on a stainless steel bracelet. Priced at $9,200, it will be available at retail in August 2014. Below please find Zenith’s official product photo of the Stratos Flyback Rainbow, followed by the live shot I snapped at JCK.
