H. Moser & Cie. Presents New Nomad GMT Watch at Baselworld 2013

Moser Nomad in PlatinumH. Moser & Cie., a boutique brand based in IWC’s hometown of Schaffhausen and beloved by many in-the-know collectors, pulled back the curtain on its newest watch model during the 2013 Baselworld watch fair, which wraps up today. Called the Nomad, it features a two-time-zone display that strives for optimum readability.

The Nomad features the familiar Moser case, with alternating polished and satin finishes and elegantly curved flanks, and is powered by an in-house automatic movement, Moser HMC 346. The dial, which is silver-plated in the rose-gold version and ardoise in the platinum model (pictured), has a sun-patterned finish, applied indices, and hour and minute hands made of 18k gold or 950 platinum. What sets this watch apart from others with second-time-zone (GMT) functions is its small, faceted third hand in red, which indicates the hour in a second time zone. Adjustable in one-hour increments at any time of day, it can also be hidden under the hour hand, tucking away the dual-time-zone indication until the wearer needs it and making for a cleaner, more legible dial.

Moser’s patented Double Pull Crown system makes it easy to adjust the second time zone using only the crown, and without inadvertently stopping the watch or changing the primary time. The AM-PM indicator at 12 o’clock, linked to the wearer’s home time zone, this indicator changes instantly from white to black at 12 noon, and then from black to white at midnight. This indicator uses a spring that stores up energy for approximately eight hours without affecting the watch’s rate. A pocketwatch-like small-seconds subdial is placed at at 6 o’clock.

The movement, Moser HMC 346, is visible through a sapphire caseback. At a diameter of 34 mm, it is one of the largest on the market, and is equipped with the technical details that the brand’s fans appreciate, including the interchangeable Moser escapement, Straumann hairspring with stabilized Breguet overcoil, and the distinctive “Moser teeth” on the wheels and pinions. The large rotor is made of 18k gold and adorned with the Moser company’s 185-year-old coat of arms. The rotor’s substantial inertia combines with a very large barrel to provide a minimum power reserve of 72 hours.

The strap is made from hand-stitched alligator leather, brown for the rose gold model and black for the platinum, and equipped with a pin buckle made of gold and bearing the engraved Moser logo. Prices have not yet been set for the U.S. market.
