Chopard Mille Miglia 2014 Rolls Out at Baselworld

Chopard Mille Miglia 2014The newest Chopard Mille Miglia watch, which made its debut this week at Baselworld 2014, is the most distinctly Italian timepiece in the collection, which is inspired by the Mille Miglia classic car race.

Chopard has partnered with the Mille Miglia, and produced special watches for it annually, since 1998. This year, the brand opted to focus on the race’s early years, when it was dominated by Italian racing teams and automobiles such as Alfa Romeo and Ferrari, by creating a watch that echoes the distinct colors of the Italian flag.

The Chopard Mille Miglia 2014 (like many previous Mille Miglia watches, a chronograph) features a red tachymeter scale and hands, and a white dial with green minute circle — the three colors of Italy’s flag. Another nod to the Mille Miglia race’s very earliest era — the 24 original race editions took place between 1927 and 1957 — is the strap. Unlike previous Chopard Mille Miglia watches, which have straps made of rubber with a 1960s Dunlop racing tire motif, the 2014 edition has one made of overstitched Barenia calfskin leather reminiscent of the bonnet straps on vintage racing cars.

The slender, cursive fonts used on the dial are similar to those used in the 1920s. The chronograph hours, chronograph minutes, and small seconds are recorded on subdials at 6, 9 and 3 o’clock. The lugs on the 42-mm case (in either steel or 18k rose gold; 12.3 mm in thickness) are soldered rather than screwed in, a traditional technique that makes the production and polishing of the case more difficult. The automatic movement in the 2014 Mille Miglia watch is a COSC-certified chronometer with a chronograph function, a power reserve of around 42 hours, and a frequency of 28,800 vph. Prices for the Chopard Mille Miglia 2014 have yet to be announced.
