Bulgari Unveils New Bulgari Roma at Baselworld

Bulgari Roma - angleBulgari introduced its first Roma wristwatch, whose design was inspired by the coins of ancient Rome, in 1975. The Roma, which became a trendsetter for watch design and inspired the brand’s iconic Bulgari Bulgari model in 1977, has now been updated for the modern era.

The new Bulgari Roma makes its debut at the 2013 Baselworld watch fair. It retains the cylindrical case geometry of the original and the engraved “double logo” on the bezel that influenced the design of other watches. Unlike the original model (pictured at bottom), which had a quartz movement and digital time display, the new Roma has an analog dial and a mechanical movement.

The dial, here in black, displays a pared-down simplicity, with gold indices and gold  numerals at 12 o’clock and 6 o’clock. The modern version features a movement developed entirely in-house by Bulgari, which powers traditional hours and minutes hands and a date display in a discreet window at 3 o’clock. The familiar curved case is in 18k rose gold and is attached to a strap of black alligator leather. The new Bulgari Roma will be issued in a limited edition of 250 pieces; U.S. prices and other technical details still to come.
