Just in time for the peak of summer, G-SHOCK has returned with a new product launch focused on bridging the gap between connectivity and high-performance durability. The MTG-B1000 fits seamlessly into the brand’s catalog of analog timepieces with connected capability. The real news here, however, is that this watch is the first MT-G with Smartphone Link software to include the new hyper-shock-resistant structure that the Japanese brand has been quietly developing.
G-SHOCK has long been recognized as an industry leader in the pursuit of heavy duty watches that can handle anything thrown at them. This has been enhanced in the MTG-B1000 thanks to a new core guard structure, a carbon fiber reinforced resin case, a shock/vibration-resistant structure for band mounts, and the inclusion of the brand’s proprietary “Triple G Resist” technology. This consists of a three-layered approach focused on shock resistance, vibration resistance, and centrifugal force resistance. The carbon fiber in the case makes the watch both lightweight and more rigid, while the case shape utilizes a multi-part construction. The inner case houses a box-shaped frame that interconnects with the bezel, back cover, and band mount components allowing for an overall improved structure. In the mounts where the metal and resin come together, metal parts and large bolts are used to connect the band and the fine resin pieces within the case. This is aided by the new Core Guard structure.
Other noticeable aesthetic details include the new mid-size case that has been shrunk by 2.8 mm length-wise and slimmed down by 1.1 mm compared to the previous model in the MTG series (S1000). Sallaz polishing has been used to create a premium metal finish on the outside of the case. G-SHOCK craftsmen used techniques such as hairline machining, knurling, and honing to create the ultra-smooth mirror finish.
As always with G-SHOCK, increased functionality has been placed at the forefront of the watch’s capabilities. The Smartphone Link system enables the MTG-B1000 to connect to the G-SHOCK Connected app through Bluetooth. Once enabled, the watch will go through multiple status checks a day, appearing as graphical displays in the smartphone app illustrating the watch’s signal reception status, its solar charge level, and its internal data update log. The watch will also automatically adjust the time for accuracy’s sake up to four times a day, features a 300 city worldtimer that can be adjusted through the smartphone, and has a selectable home time/world time display.
Looking at the dial through the watch’s sapphire crystal, you can see the dual time zone indicator at 6 o’clock and directly to the right of it a smaller AM/PM subdial and date window. There’s a larger subdial at 9 o’clock that features both the power reserve and the day of the week. There’s some precise detailing on the indices and inset dials that, combined with the laser-etched hour and minute hands, increase the overall aesthetic appeal. Finally, the watch is water resistant to 200 meters.
The G-SHOCK MTG-B1000 is priced at $800.
