This month, just in time for the holidays, Japan’s G-SHOCK has introduced the latest update to its luxury-focused MT-G series, the new MTGB2000YBD. At a glance, the predominantly black-and-red watch might seem familiar to previous MT-G models, but a closer look — and handling — reveals an extremely lightweight timepiece that once more hammers on the brand’s renowned combination of style, toughness, and practicality.

Weighing just 131 grams despite its prominent 49.8-mm case size, the MTGB2000YBD’s incredibly lightweight wearability comes as the result of an ingeniously developed multi-layer carbon bezel frame housing a monocoque inner case, which results in an overall 15.9 mm thickness; it is G-SHOCK’s first application of this technology in a production timepiece. In technical terms, this technology merges the new MT-G layered bezel frame with the latest G-SHOCK Carbon Core Guard structure, resulting in the watch’s increased lightness and enhanced durability, and in effect achieving high strength, airtightness, and weight reduction all at once.

Built tough from the outside in, the outer facets of the MTGB2000YBD are just as smartly designed and manufactured. Notably, the watch’s side-visible bezel frame is constructed of 235 sheets of layered and machined carbon and glass fiber, resulting in a frame that’s about 77% lighter than one made of stainless steel. A top-layer carbon sheet is wrapped around the sides of the watch at the 3, 6, 9, and 12 o’clock positions to provide further strength, while additional cylindrical carbon sheets are wrapped around the lugs to enhance durability at a critical point. These applications of carbon technology throughout the case are paired with a brand-new polygonal crown design, which aids in immediately demonstrating the watch’s strength and beauty.

In terms of aesthetics, the watch projects a stylish toughness on the wrist — metal, carbon, and resin all blending to create a dark and distinguished MT-G unlike any other. A meticulous finishing appears throughout the watch’s surfaces, further emphaszing the MTGB2000YBD elevated style. These techniques include the use of G-SHOCK’s premium Sallaz polishing along the metal component’s beveled edges, resulting in lustrous, mirror-finished surfaces with high degrees of smoothness.

The MTGB2000YBD’s attention-grabbing case connects to a matching layered-composite bracelet, which offers an excellent fit on the wrist. Like the case, the bracelet uses a multi-layered and material construction, with components made of fine resin as well as hollow stainless steel components crafted with metal injection molding (MIM) for even more weight reduction. A double-slide lever structure also makes it easy to attach and remove the bracelet, while a three-fold clasp firmly secures the watch to its wearer.

The new ultralight and durable G-SHOCK MTGB2000YBD is priced at $1,200 and is available for purchase now at select G-SHOCK retailers, the G-SHOCK Soho Store, and via gshock.com.

  1. A good looking watch but Its a shame the bezel isn’t carbon fibre, that would have made it even lighter and added to the carbon aesthetic.
