Connected to the World: Introducing the G-Shock MTG-B1000-1A

The G-SHOCK MTG collection, in which the “MT” stands for “Metal Twisted,” continues to expand and to win over new fans worldwide. “Metal Twisted” refers to the original model’s unique case construction, with a stainless steel covering melded to the G-SHOCK brand’s advanced “core guard structure” of stainless steel,resin and a substance called “Alpha Gel.” Following up last year’s launch of the MTGB1000 — the first smartphone-linked MTG model with an enhanced core guard structure combining carbon fiber and resin — G-SHOCK this summer brings out the MTG-B1000B-1A, whose new “Connected Engine” module allows it to keep accurate time anywhere in the world and connects to a time server either via a paired smartphone or using radio wave time-calibration signals.

The core guard structure of the watch’s 51.92mm case includes a shock- and vibration-resistant structure for the band mounts, and features G-SHOCK’s proprietary “Triple G Resist” technology, which applies a three-layered approach for maximum shock resistance, vibration resistance, and centrifugal force resistance. The case is also water-resistant to 200 meters, includes a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal over the face, and features an outer surface enhanced with an AIP® (arc ion platting) titanium coating for a bold, high-tech look. The case’s multi-part construction utilizes an inner box-shaped frame that interconnects with the bezel, back cover, and band mount components for an overall improved structure. Where metal and resin come together in the mounts, metal parts and large bolts connect the strap and the fine resin pieces within the case.

The movement is G-SHOCK’s LED-infused “Tough Movement,” equipped with the Japanese brand’s innovative and now-familiar Multi-Band 6 Atomic Timekeeping Technology, which receives radio-controlled time and date update signals from global transmitting stations, up to six of them worldwide. This movement connects via Bluetooth to the G-SHOCK Connected smartphone app to also enable the user to easily set the world time — in up to 300 cities selectable within the app — as well as set up alarms. As with all G-SHOCKs, the MTGB1000B-1A offers a wide array of functionality in addition to the world time, including a Super Illuminator LED light, a built-in stopwatch and countdown timer, a daily alarm, and a full calendar with date. The watch is also engineered for optimum user-friendly accuracy: once connected to the app, it will perform multiple status checks each day, which appear as graphical displays in the smartphone app illustrating the watch’s signal reception status, its solar charge level, and its internal data update log. Best of all, the watch will also automatically adjust the time for accuracy’s sake up to four times per day.

The dial of the G-SHOCK MTGB1000B-1A is complex in its displays but arranged elegantly: the bezel’s flange is etched with the initials of cities representing the major world time zones; the large subdial at 9 o’clock combines the day-of-the-week display with a battery life indicator; the 6 o’clock subdial displays the dual time zone along with a small, overlapping AM/PM indicator to its upper right; the time in 24-hour mode occupies the 12 o’clock subdial; and the date appears in a window at 4:30. All the elements of this multi-level dial are swept over by swordlike laser-etched hands. The G-SHOCK MTGB1000B-1A retails for $900.
