Porsche Design adds to its collection of timepieces — which launched in 1972 with the iconic Chronograph I inspired by a Porsche 911 dashboard — with the introduction of the new Sport Chrono wristwatch collection alongside a revolutionary dashboard clock for the Porsche Panamera.

The new product line includes a chronograph and a trio of three-hand models with small seconds. Each combines classic design features, materials and performance-related elements used in sports car construction. The automatic chronograph is powered by Porsche Design’s COSC-certified caliber WERK 01.100 movement, while all three versions of the Sport Chrono Sub Second are equipped with the Porsche Design caliber WERK 03.200 movement, which has also earned a COSC chronometer certificate for proven accuracy. Like the dashboard instruments from which it takes inspiration, this automatic movement puts the display of the small seconds at six o’clock and highlights once again Porsche Design’s watchmaking expertise in making veritable “sports cars on the wrist.”

Back to the roots

The evolution and global success of Porsche Design’s Chronograph I, inspired by the instruments from the Porsche 911 dashboard, began with its debut in 1972. Its matte black dial, which was reduced to the bare essentials, remains legendary in the watch industry to this day, and its pure white indices and hands made it easy to read at any time of day and from any angle. The central red stop seconds hand, which mimicked the needle of a tachometer, was also inspired by the cockpit of the sports car. The design credo behind the model – that a harmonious design results from an object’s underlying function — was the philosophy of Porsche Design’s founder, Professor Ferdinand Alexander Porsche.

Porsche Sport Chrono Package: Easy to read in every second

When the legendary Porsche 911 was first launched, the dashboard instruments included an electric timepiece as part of the 5-tube instruments. In the early 2000s, Porsche added an additional central instrument that was placed prominently in the middle. Initially displaying lap times, it was continuously refined to provide more control functions for engine and chassis components as well as the exhaust system. As part of the so-called “Sport Chrono Package,” it was not a classic three-hand clock, but rather an instrument with a digital display and a single hand. With the new Sport Chrono Package and Porsche Design’s Sub Second timepiece, the vision of combining a sports car with a perfectly readable instrument in the form of a premium wristwatch chronometer has become reality. Available for the first time in the new Porsche Panamera models via manufacture assembly, the new electrically powered clock features a high-end radial-cut metal dial, ceramic indices with Super-LumiNova coating, and metal hands. In combination with the specially developed incident-light technology, it is engineered to be easy to read, from every angle, at every second — just like a Porsche Design wristwatch.

Porsche Design Sport Chrono Sub Second: Big time for small seconds

The new Sport Chrono Collection watches accompany the launch of the extended Sport Chrono Package in the Panamera. The Sport Chrono Sub Second models, powered by the new WERK 03.200 caliber and boasting a stylishly reduced design, are available in Titanium & Black, Titanium & Blue, or Titanium & Brown color combinations. A hallmark of Porsche Design, titanium is water-resistant to 100 meters, extremely robust and highly comfortable to wear because of its particularly light weight.

In contrast to the Sub Second chronometer models, which are equipped with a closed caseback, the chronograph equipped with the Porsche Design WERK 01.100 caliber features a sapphire crystal caseback. The high-quality construction and winding rotor with the “P” Icon can be seen through the caseback. Other classic Porsche Design features include the sevenfold anti-reflective sapphire crystal with hard coating, the high-quality leather strap made from genuine Porsche interior leather and the titanium folding clasp with safety push-buttons.

Sport Chrono automatic chronograph

The Sport Chrono Sub Second watches are available for $4,750 and the automatic chronograph is priced at $6,150. The models of the new Porsche Design Sport Chrono Timepieces Collection are available now in Porsche Design Stores and online at www.porsche-design.com.
