TAG Heuer Introduces New Heuer-01 Chronograph with Matte Black Ceramic Case

TAG Heuer launched the Carrera Heuer-01, a modern reinterpretation of its classic Carrera chronograph watch, at Baselworld 2015. The watch, now a flagship of the brand as well as its current best seller, will soon be available for the first time in a matte black ceramic version. Here’s a sneak peek at the new Heuer-01, which officially launches later this month in Geneva during the SIHH watch fair.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01 Full Black Matte Ceramic 45mm boasts the modular, 12-part case structure characteristic of the Heuer-01 series, with a case middle, bezel, and lugs made of micro-blasted black ceramic. To ensure a water-resistance of 100 meters, and to protect the various gaskets, the case’s functional parts — including the inner box section, screw-down caseback, and chronograph push-pieces — are made of steel. Ceramic is in many respects an ideal material for watches, as it is extremely hard yet soft to the touch, highly scratch-resistant, hypoallergenic, oxidation-proof, and lighter than steel. The bracelet, with its hallmark H-shaped links, is also made of this material.

As in previous previous models of the Heuer-01, the automatic movement in the new black ceramic model has an openworked date disk on the dial side (here in a black bordered window at 3:30), a bold red column wheel visible on the back side, a skeletonized chronograph bridge and a blackened, openworked  rotor. The movement holds a power reserve of 50 hours. The movement’s chronograph functions are arranged in a tricompax display on the skeleton dial: chronograph minutes counter on a subdial at 12 o’clock, hours counter at 6 o’clock, and small seconds at 9 o’clock, all with black snailed outer rings. The bezel features a tachymeter scale with engraved gray numerals and markers.

The 45-mm case is outfitted with a domed, scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with nonreflective coating. It has a ridged crown made of steel and rubber, and steel chronograph push-buttons coated in black titanium carbide. The black ceramic bracelet has a folding buckle in black titanium carbide-coated steel with a double push-piece safety mechanism. A version with a black rubber strap will also be available. The TAG Heuer Carrera Heuer-01 Full Black Matte Ceramic will be priced at $6,300.

  1. Great watch, sadly it lacks a screw down crown which would be expected if it is to consider itself a sports watch.

  2. Given its a watch, would be nice to be able to read the time. Compare to breitling chronomat black steel

Normally, the skeletonised watches look great, but reading time on these is very difficult.

Since, this particular TAG Heuer is totally black, so reading time on this particular skeletonised watch would be ultra-difficult.

On the other hand this TAG Heuer is not very expensive, and so some people may buy this watch as a novelty, just to show off.

  5. Looks awesome! Love the skeletonized look. What’s the price in $ and when is it available in the States.

  6. Great; another really nice watch that I won’t be able to read or tell time. I could not see the time in the blown up photo with my reading glasses on. WOW!!!

Pardon me if I come across as nasty but this is a confused black blob. A far cry from the beautiful chronographs that Heuer/Tag Heuer is actually famous for.

Don’t know what the designer of this watch was thinking. It’s hard enough to tell what time it is and the chrono indicators are almost unreadable. A poor design coupled with too much hype. Just an opinion.

    This watch’s legibility is atrocious!
Value retention will be most likely extremely poor!
