Showing at WatchTime New York 2015: Nomos Metro 38 Datum

We’re a little over a week away from the start of America’s Luxury Watch Show, WatchTime New York, at Manhattan’s Gotham Hall on October 23-24 (Click here for event details and to purchase tickets). Among the more than 20 luxury watch brands you’ll see there is Germany’s Nomos Glashütte, which will be showcasing its new Metro 38 Datum models.

The Nomos Metro 38 Datum and Metro 38 Datum urban gray are the latest additions to the brand’s Metro collection, which has won awards for its minimalist, Bauhaus-influenced designs. In contrast to their predecessors, the new watches’ dials do not have power-reserve displays — making for an even cleaner dial — but do feature extra-large date indicators at 6 o’clock along with the small seconds subdial. The stainless steel cases of the new models are also slightly larger, at 38.5 mm in diameter. The Datum has blue dot hour indices at 3, 6, and 9 o’clock and a red lacquered seconds hand, contrasting with the galvanized, white silver-plated dial; the Datum urban gray uses mint green for the 3, 6, and 9 o’clock dot hour markers and features a dark gray, galvanized ruthenium dial. Both dials are under curved sapphire crystals.

Both versions of the Nomos 38 Datum are powered by the in-house Caliber DUW 4101, which has been equipped with the Nomos swing system, an in-house escapement introduced in 2014 that represents the Glashütte-based manufacturer’s independence from third-party suppliers of escapements such as Switzerland’s ETA. (Click here for more on the Nomos swing system.) The movement is manual-winding and has a stop-seconds mechanism, a Glashutte stopwork, Incabloc shock protection, 23 jewels, a balance frequency of 21,600 vph, and a power reserve of around 42 hours when fully wound. Caliber DUW 4101, which is visible through a clear sapphire caseback, features the traditional Glashutte three-quarter mainplate and boasts rhodium-plated movement surfaces decorated with Glashutte waves and perlage; the ratchet and crown wheel have a sunburst finish, and the screws and balance spring are tempered blue.
