Showing at WatchTime New York 2015: A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Up/Down

WatchTime New York, our biggest and most luxurious watch collectors’ event to date, will take place October 23-24 at Manhattan’s Gotham Hall. (Click here for event details and to purchase tickets). More than a dozen luxury watch brands will display their timepieces at the event, including Germany’s A. Lange & Söhne, whose showcase pieces will include the new gold-cased, black-dialed version of its Datograph Up/Down, introduced at SIHH 2015.

The A. Lange & Söhne Datograph Up/Down, a model launched in 2012, combines a flyback chronograph — with a classic column-wheel control mechanism and precisely jumping minute counter — with a large “Outsize” date indication, a hallmark of the Glashütte-based brand. As with other Lange watches, the layout of the dial is elegantly balanced, with the double-window outsize date display and the two argenté subdials (running seconds at 8 o’clock and 30-minute chronograph counter at 4 o’clock) forming an equilateral triangle. The “Up/Down” in the watch’s name refers to the other element on the dial — the power-reserve indicator with “AUF” (“up”) representing the maximum power reserve of 60 hours when fully wound, and “AB” (“down”) warning the wearer that the mainspring’s energy has been depleted when the rose-gold arrow enters the red zone.

The case of this newest version of the popular Datograph Up/Down is made of 18k rose gold and measures 41 mm in diameter. In addition to the winding crown (with engraved A. Lange & Sohne emblem) and the two chronograph pusher, the case also features, at 10 o’clock, an additional pusher for rapid correction of the outsize date. The black dial is made of solid silver, with rose gold used for the hour and minute hands (both treated with luminous material) and the baton hour markers. The watch has sapphire crystals in the front and back.

The Datograph’s movement, Lange’s manufacture Caliber L951.6 (below), is visible through the caseback window. Composed of 451 parts, the manual-wind movement is assembled and decorated by hand and incorporates all of the quality hallmarks that Lange aficionados have come to expect, including a three-quarter plate made of untreated German silver, lavishly finished movement parts, a hand-engraved balance cock, and four gold chatons secured with screws. Looking through the caseback, the wearer can see many of the watch’s functions in action, such as jumping of the minute counter, ensuring precise time measurement, and the motion of the column wheel as it controls the chronograph functions.
