SIHH 2014 Preview: 3 Tourbillon Watches from Vacheron Constantin, Greubel Forsey, & Ralph Lauren

Ralph Lauren Watches and Jewelry had tongues wagging at last year’s SIHH when it released, in only its fifth year of existence, its first tourbillon watch, the RL67 Safari Tourbillon. The brand, a partnership between the famed fashion house and the Richemont Group, is launching another one this year: the Ralph Lauren RL67 Black Safari Flying Tourbillon.

The flying tourbillon (so called because its cantilevered construction, with a support only at the bottom of the tourbillon cage, makes it appear suspended in space, or “flying”) is visible through an aperture at 6 o’clock on the dial. The shot-blasted, black stainless steel case is 45 mm in diameter and has a sapphire exhibition caseback.

The dial is encircled by an outer ring of richly toned elm burlwood, which contrasts with the inner dial’s matte black. The sword-shaped hours and minutes hands are coated with luminescent material.

The movement in the new Ralph Lauren Tourbillon is proprietary Caliber RL67, with a 28,800 vph frequency and automatic winding via an off-centered, gold-plated microrotor. The watch has a black alligator strap. Ralph Lauren says that the price of the watch will be around $80,000.
