Porsche Design Rolls Out New Watches For Its 40th Anniversary

Porsche Design 40Y Chronograph IThe Porsche Design Studio, founded by Porsche 911 designer Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, marks four decades this year. To celebrate, Porsche Design is releasing four new watches: a limited-edition model of its very first product, the Chronograph I, and three new additions to its Flat Six collection.

The limited-edition Chronograph I features a matte silver-gray case and bracelet, replacing the matte-black color scheme of the original from 1972. Most of the other details remain the same, including the black dial; the type, hands and bar indices filled with white luminous substance; and the red central chronograph hand. It is identified as an anniversary edition by the “40Y” immediately beneath the day/date windows at 3 o’clock. The watch, which is limited to 911 pieces worldwide, comes packaged in a special collectors’ box labeled “40Y of Iconic Products” along with another limited-edition Porsche Design anniversary item, a pair of P’8478 sunglasses with a “40Y” logo on the temples and inside surfaces that matches the red color of the watch’s second hand. (Sunglasses are the second item Porsche Design released, after the watch.)

The other new models are two three-hand timepieces, the P’6350 and P’6351, and a chronograph called the P’6360. All are part of Porsche Design’s Flat Six family, distinguished by its straightforward lines and clean, dashboard-inspired dial design. The P’6350 Automatic has a 44-mm-diameter case, in either shot-blasted and polished stainless steel or shot-blasted and polished, PVD-coated stainless steel. It has a date display at 3 o’clock and the Flat Six collection’s characteristic broad hands and indices. The movement is a Sellita SW200, with a 38-hour power reserve and a frequency of 28,800 vph. The P’6360 differs substantially only in its case size: at 40 mm in diameter, Porsche Design considers it a more feminine timepiece. Both watches are available with 10 different dial colors and various types of straps.

The P’6360 Flat Six Automatic Chronograph, which has a 44-mm case, has three subdials on the left side of the dial: a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, a 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock and a small seconds dial at 9 o’clock. Two windows for the day and date indications are at 3 o’clock. The bevelled inner bezel has an engraved tachymeter scale that can measure speeds of 50 to 330 km/h. This watch is powered by an ETA 7750 chronograph movement with a frequency of 28,800 beats per hour and a power reserve of approximately 42 hours. As with the Automatic, its case and bracelet are in shot-blasted and polished stainless steel, or in shot-blasted and polished PVD-coated stainless steel. It’s also available with a black or white rubber strap. All the new watches are available now at Porsche Design boutiques and authorized retailers.

    • Agreed, I prefer the 37 – 39mm range but it seems “standard” sizes are moving into the 41 – 42 mm range.
Fine, I’ll just avoid them, but to imply 40 is feminine is totally ridiculous!
