SIHH 2017:

Panerai Launches America’s Cup Sponsorship, Official Watches (Updated with Live Photos, U.S. Prices)

Panerai, which has for more than a decade sponsored its own Classic Yachts Challenge racing series, announced at SIHH that it will take an even bigger role in the world of yacht racing, becoming the official partner of the 35th America’s Cup. The Swiss-made, Florentine-born watch brand has also partnered with two major America’s Cup racing teams: Oracle Team USA, which won the most recent Cup in historic fashion, and Softbank Team Japan, the first Cup competitor from Asia in 15 years. Of course, the new partnerships are being commemorated with several new limited-edition America’s Cup watches. Here’s what you need to know about them.

Panerai Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic Acciaio – 44mm

The Panerai Luminor Marina 1950 America’s Cup 3 Days Automatic Acciaio – 44mm is the Official Watch of the event itself, which will be held later this year in Bermuda. Its stainless steel case measures 44 mm in diameter and, like all Luminor models, features Panerai’s patented crown-protection lever device. The watch, which is water-resistant to a respectable 300 meters, has a polished bezel and a black “sandwich” dial. The date appears at 3 o’clock and the running seconds on a subdial at 9 o’clock. “America’s Cup” is printed in blue above the 6 o’clock position, and the black, untreated leather strap, with the America’s Cup logo heat-embossed on both sides, is stitched with red-and-blue thread. Inside is Panerai’s in-house Caliber P.9010, an automatic movement with a three-day power reserve. The solid caseback is engraved with an America’s Cup logo. The watch (Ref. PAM00727) is limited to 300 pieces and priced at $8,100.

Panerai Luminor 1950 Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica – 44mm

Oracle Team USA is represented by three new timepieces. The Panerai Luminor 1950 Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Ceramica – 44mm is one of two pieces equipped with a flyback chronograph function. It has a 44-mm case made of matte black ceramic and water-resistant to 100 meters. The caseback, which is made of titanium, is embossed with the logo of Oracle Team USA and the inscription “35th America’s Cup.” The movement, manufacture Caliber P.9100, equips the watch with a column-wheel chronograph that is stopped and started by the pusher at 10 o’clock, while the flyback function can be engaged by the pusher at 8 o’clock. The America’s Cup colors are evident in the red and blue chronograph seconds hands, the red chronograph hour hand, and the blue small seconds hand. A tachymeter scale, which can be used to time the speed of a vessel in knots, is also red. Red stitching (with a smattering of blue) appears on the black leather strap, along with the heat-embossed Cup logo. Limited to 200 pieces, the watch is priced at $15,300.

Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Titanio – 47mm

The only one of the new watches with a yachting-inspired regatta countdown function is the Panerai Luminor 1950 Regatta Oracle Team USA 3 Days Chrono Flyback Automatic Titanio – 47mm. The large, 47-mm case is made of brushed titanium and powered by Panerai’s Caliber P.9100/R, essentially the same automatic flyback chrono movement used for the previous watch but here with an added module for the countdown function, operated by the red pusher at 4:00. The 10 o’clock pusher starts and stops the chronograph, and the pusher at 9 o’clock returns both chronograph hands to zero. Like all the Oracle Team USA editions, it has a solid caseback with a relief engraving of the team’s logo and an illustration of its trimaran boat. The movement, in addition to driving the timekeeping functions, chronograph, and countdown timer, stores a power reserve of three days. Tagged with the reference PAM00726, the watch is limited to 200 pieces at $17,900.

The 44-mm stainless steel case is water-resistant to 300 meters and features the patented crown protector. The matte black “sandwich” dial hosts a blue seconds hand on the subdial at 9 o’clock. The black leather strap has the red-and-blue stitching and heat-embossed logo of the America’s Cup, and the caseback is engraved with a rendering of the team’s yacht. The watch (Ref. The stitching on the strap is white and red, reminiscent of the Japanese flag. The small seconds hand is also in red. Re-check the price, please, of the 8 days, 44mm. If it’s correct then Panerai will sell millions of those…

  4. I see a little problem with this part:

The watch (Ref. PAM00724) carries a retail price of $1,700

I expect it to be a bit more expensive….$ 7,100?

Fairly sure this is a typo: “The watch (Ref. PAM00724) carries a retail price of $1,700.” if not, sign me up for one, please
