The Volvo Ocean Race is an around-the-world yacht race held every three years. The current race began this month in Alicante, Spain. Over the next nine months, the crews will battle it out on four oceans taking them to five continents, and they will cover a total of 38,739 nautical miles, or nearly 45,000 statute miles. The longest leg stretches almost 7,800 statute miles from Auckland, New Zealand to Itajai, Brazil. While crossing the Southern Ocean, the yachts will face waves up to 100 feet in height and wind speeds reaching 70 miles per hour – conditions that make this one of sailing’s toughest challenges. The race will finish up in Gothenburg, Sweden in June, 2015.
This contest marks the second time IWC has served as Official Timekeeper, and to celebrate the event, the manufacture has created the new IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer,” reference IW390216, to be issued in a special edition of 1,000 pieces. IWC CEO Georges Kern said, “We’re dedicating this watch to the teams’ sporting spirit and their commitment to extreme racing.” IWC further strengthened its commitment to the event by consolidating its partnership with the Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing team, which is taking part in the race for the second time.
The Yacht Club Ocean Racer case measures 45.4 mm in diameter. The IWC manufacture caliber 89361 inside features a flyback function and aggregate timing of up to 12 hours, shown by an analogue display with two hands in a subdial at 12 o’clock. The case is water-resistant to 50 meters. This is the only IWC Portuguese watch with crown protection as well as luminous hands and indices. In an allusion to extreme sailing, the 360-degree rotor is modeled on a ship’s wheel. The IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph “Ocean Racer” is supplied with a black rubber strap featuring an alligator leather inlay.
