Glashütte Original Sixties Iconic Square: 5 Colorful New Models

Glashütte Original evokes the geometric forms and colorful visuals of the 1960s with its new Sixties Iconic Square collection, a set of five new chronograph watches with squared cushion cases and five dazzling, colored dials produced at the company’s own dialmaker in the German town of Pforzheim.

Glashütte Original’s Sixties Iconic Square Collection is comprised of five new chronograph models.

The Glashütte Original Sixties Iconic Square watches — and, in fact, the brand’s entire Sixties collection — draw their inspiration from the “Spezimatic” models produced in Germany in the 1960s. The modern models’ cushion-shaped square cases, domed dials, curved hands, and period-appropriate wavy Arabic numerals are callbacks to those now-iconic mid-century timepieces. The dial colors are Sixties Iconic Forest (green); Sixties Iconic Ocean (blue); Sixties Iconic Graphite (gray); Sixties Iconic Tangerine (yellow-orange); and Sixties Iconic Fire (bright red). All are made using original tools and authentic materials from the decade for which the collection is named.

Glashütte Original’s expert dialmakers create each dial through a complex and time-consuming process that involves the application of colored lacquers for precise hues and shading and finishes with the so-called “dégradé” effect that achieves the dials’ light-center-to-dark-perimeter gradient look.

First, the dials are given a galvanic base coat, followed by layers of colored lacquer, which are added by hand in a series of steps. In the final step, black lacquer is carefully applied to these layers using a special spray gun. The angle at which the gun is held determines each dial’s individual color gradient; this technique is known as dégradé, and renders each watch unique. The unusual color of the Tangerine dial (below, right) results from the initial galvanic coating in gold being combined not only with a layer of black, but also a layer of red.

The lacquered dials are then fired in an oven to burn in the colors. Four of the five models are enhanced with a sunburst finish, which enhances the dégradé effect. The fifth, with the Graphite dial, has a different finish. Prior to galvanic nickel plating the dial blank is stamped, with the help of a 60-ton press, with the intricate guilloché filigree pattern.

The square, cushion-shaped, stainless steel cases measure 41.35 x 41.35 mm in diameter and 12.6 mm thick. All of the watches are equipped with the Glashütte Original manufacture Caliber 39-34, with automatic winding, an integrated chron0graph function, and a 40-hour power reserve.  Visible through a clear sapphire caseback, the movement features a three-quarter plate with Glashutte ribbing, a swan’s neck adjustment, and a skeletonized rotor with a 21k gold weight. Each watch is fitted with a matching Louisiana alligator leather strap: brown for the Forest Green and Tangerine models, black for the Graphite, Ocean, and Fire versions.

The Glashütte Original Sixties Iconic Square Collection is limited to just 25 pieces each, available in Glashütte Original Boutiques and selected retailers worldwide.
