SIHH 2017:

Baume & Mercier Offers Swiss-Made “My Classima” Models Starting Under $1,000

If you’re feeling the economic pinch of the post-holiday season — but are still clamoring to purchase a genuine Swiss watch, either as a gift for a relative or protegé or to celebrate a personal or career accomplishment of your own — Baume & Mercier may have an ideal timepiece for you. The brand’s My Classima collection, which had its worldwide launch this week at SIHH 2017, is aimed at young and aspirational watch consumers, with prices starting at $990.

The Baume & Mercier Classima collection, of which these new models constitute a line extension, represents the 186-year-old brand’s most basic signature elements, taking as its inspiration a timepiece from the 1940s that is now part of the Baume & Mercier archives. My Classima watches are available in three case sizes for both men and ladies — 31 mm, 36.5 mm, and 40 mm in diameter, all in stainless steel. Each has the option for either a steel bracelet or a genuine leather strap in either black (for the 40-mm model) or navy blue (for the 36.5-mm and 31-mm versions).

Each watch has the classically simple Classima look, with applied Roman numerals, elegantly shaped central hours and minutes hands, and a date window at 3 o’clock. The movement is Swiss quartz and is hidden behind a solid steel caseback, which offers the owner ample space for a personalized engraving. A similar steel watch from the main Classima collection, powered by a Swiss-made, mechanical Sellita movement, would cost a little north of $2,500. The Baume & Mercier My Classima collection will be available at retailers in November.

$990 for a quartz movement? I don’t think so. Good luck selling that against the Japanese competitors.

  3. Why do all your silver watches have to have silver hands? What about contrasting hands that one can glance at and read? Disappointed watch lover me!
