Baume & Mercier Announces Clifton GMT Power Reserve & Promesse Moon Phase

Baume & Mercier is adding new models to two of its most recently launched watch collections — the men’s Clifton line and ladies’ Promesse line — at SIHH 2017 in January. Here is a sneak preview of the new timepieces, both decked out in blue: the Clifton GMT Power Reserve and Promesse Moon Phase.

Baume & Mercier Clifton & Promesse watches

The Baume & Mercier Clifton GMT Power Reserve is the latest “small complication” in the Clifton collection, joining previous models such as this year’s Chronograph Complete Calendar. Fitted with a 43-mm stainless steel case, with polished and satin finishes and bearing the collection’s hallmark double bezel, the watch has a sun-satin-finished deep blue dial, under a domed sapphire crystal, which displays a wealth of timekeeping information. The central, rhodiumed triangle-shaped hands display the current time on similarly rhodium-plated Arabic numerals and indices while the date is revealed in a window at 3 o’clock. The arc-shaped GMT indicator, a useful function for frequent travelers, occupies the space at 12 o’clock, and another semicircular display at 6 o’clock informs the wearer how much remains of the watch’s 42-hour power reserve.

Inside the 50-meter water-resistant case, and visible through a screwed sapphire caseback, is the automatic Soprod 9035 movement, whose decorations include a circular grained mainplate and bridges, blued screws and a rotor enhanced with côtes de Genève. The watch is mounted on a square-scaled black alligator strap, with tone-on-tone stitching and a triple-folding, adjustable, push-button-operated security clasp. The Baume & Mercier Clifton GMT Power Reserve will retail for $3,690.

The Baume & Mercier Promesse Moon Phase is the first complicated watch to debut in the elegant, historically influenced Promesse collection, which was launched in 2014. It has a 34-mm case in stainless steel, with the collection’s signature oval bezel set with 30 diamonds in two crescent moon-shaped grooves along the sides. Four more brilliant-cut diamonds appear as hour indices on the blue lacquered dial, whose showpiece element is the moon-phase display in the upper segment, above the center-mounted hour and minute hands and beneath the domed, antiglare, scratch-resistant crystal.

The movement in this watch is the Ronda 708, a Swiss-made quartz caliber, which nestles behind a solid steel caseback secured by four screws. The strap is glossy blue alligator leather, secured by a pin buckle. The price of the Promesse Moon Phase is set at $3,790. Both new Baume & Mercier watches — and surely, many more — will make their official debut at the SIHH 2017 watch salon, held in Geneva from January 16 to January 20.

  1. Baume & Mercier Promesse Moon Phase would be my preference without diamonds in a 40mm size for men. The new Baume & Mercier Cliftion GMT is to large. Remedy: Bring back the the Baume & Mercier 1983 Riviera design watch which had a beautiful shape and size.
