Bauhaus Comes to Basel: The Porsche Design 1919 Eternity Collection

Exhibiting for the first time in Baselworld since its reinvention as an independent watch manufacturer, Porsche Design introduced the newest of its revamped watch collections, the 1919 Datetimer Eternity, a timepiece the brand says was inspired both by Bauhaus design and by the aesthetic codes of the legendary Porsche 356 sports car.

The headliner of the new Porsche Design 1919 Datetimer Eternity collection (The name “Eternity” represents the watch’s “timeless” design, according to the brand) has a 42-mm case made of bronze-colored titanium and features a unique-looking gray-green dial, protected by a convex sapphire crystal with seven layers of nonreflective coating on both sides. The influence of the Bauhaus art-and-design movement is evident in the elegant, minimalist dial, which features a classical arrangement of central hours, minutes and seconds hands, a date window at 3 o’clock, and ceramic-insert Arabic numerals and hour indices.

Behind the screwed caseback of the Datetimer Eternity beats the watch’s engine, an automatic Sellita SW 200 caliber outfitted with the brand’s “Icon” rotor and storing a power reserve of 38 hours. The strap — attached to the case by Porsche Design’s characteristic open-design lugs, is brown alligator leather with a folding clasp, a complement to the watch’s vintage, patinated appearance.

For those looking for a more “traditional” Porsche Design watch, the brand offers the 1919 Datetimer Eternity Black Edition, available in four distinct versions with a variety of straps and bracelets. The dials are classical black rather than gray-green and the strap/bracelet options include All Black (with black titanium carbide coated case and bracelet), All Titanium (titanium case and bracelet), Black & Rubber (black titanium case and “LaserFlex” textured black rubber strap), and Titanium & Rubber (titanium case and the same black rubber strap). All of the Eternity Black Edition also feature 42-mm cases and Sellita SW 200 movements.
