Longines Twenty-Four Hours Single Push-Piece Chronograph

Longines 24 Hours Single Push-Piece Chronograph - gray backgroundLongines has added another new watch to its vintage-inspired Longines Heritage collection. The Longines Twenty-Four Hours Single Push-Piece Chronograph takes its cues, including its extra-large case and pocketwatch-sized movement, from a historical Longines pilots’ watch from the 1950s.

Like the brand’s other Heritage watches, the Longines Twenty-Four Hours Single Push-Piece Chronograph is a modern re-issue of a vintage watch currently housed in Longines’s museum in the Swiss town of St. Imier, where the Longines watch company was founded in 1832. It duplicates the original model’s massive, round case — 47.5 mm in diameter, in stainless steel — as well as its dial with a 24-hour scale (available here in silvered or black).

The case has a sapphire crystal, treated with several layers of nonreflective coating, and a solid caseback adorned with the famed Longines hourglass logo (A bit of trivia, courtesy of the brand: this logo, in use since 1889 and registered internationally with the World Intellectual Property Organization, is the oldest logo still in active use in its original form.) It is water-resistant to 30 meters and comes on a brown or black alligator strap with an aviator’s extension.

The movement in the Longines Twenty-Four Hours Single Push-Piece Chronograph is the exclusive Longines Caliber L789.2 (based on the ETA A08.L21), a self-winding caliber originally intended for a pocketwatch, which measures an impressive 13 1/4 lignes, has a frequency of 28,800 vph and a power reserve of 54 hours. The movement includes a column-wheel chronograph function, operated by a single push-piece integrated into the crown, a small seconds display at the traditional 9 o’clock position (18 o’clock on this watch’s 24-hour dial) and a date display in a window at the 6 o’clock position (12 o’clock here). The Longines Twenty-Four Hours Single Push-Piece Chronograph is priced at $4,800.

  1. At nearly 48mm it would be perfect for a Sumo wrestler of a defensive tackle for the NFL.
