The 18 watches taking part in the 2011 International Chronometry Contest were submitted on Friday May 20 at the Musée d’horlogerie du Locle – Château des Monts. The watches come from the Jura, from Geneva, from France and the United States. The watches will be subjected to a number of tests over the summer, and the results will be announced on October 20.

The contest is open only to mechanical watches. Ten watchmaking companies and four schools will take part in the 2011 competition. Timepieces presented by the companies are equally divided between classic and tourbillon movements. Participanting schools are presenting the classic movement watches using calibre ETA 6498 that they prepared for the 2010 Swiss Chronometry Society competition.

During the competition, the timepieces will be subjected to a variety of tests that are based on international standards, and that are much more rigorous than the well-known COSC tests. Measurements will be carried out in officially-certified laboratories in Besançon, Bienne and Le Locle. In addition to timekeeping accuracy measurements, the watches will undergo magnetism and shock tests, reproducing conditions of everyday use.
