Parmigiani Fleurier’s manufacturing team has created both hand-wound and automatic movements, including the perpetual calendar, tourbillons, an ultra-slim model, chronograph, the Bugatti and the Hemispheres, but an annual calendar was missing, until now. It appears in the Tonda collection in a case measuring 40mm in diameter.
The new complication is based on the brand’s PF 331 automatic movement, with the incorporation of a new additional Parmigiani module, creating the PF 339 Annual Calendar. The Annual Calendar automatically accounts for the variation in the number of days in each month. Only one manual correction needs be made each year, (for the month of February in non-leap years). In a leap year, the date will display February 29 and will automatically advance to March 1 the following day.
The Tonda Retrograde Annual Calendar features a hand which indicates the date from 1-31 on the retrograde sector on the outer dial. The day of the week is positioned at 9 o’clock and the month, shown as a number from 1 to 12, is at 3 o’clock. The precision moon display, developed in the Parmigiani workshops, completes the indications. Requiring only one correction every 120 years, it helps reduce the discrepancy between a classic lunar cycle (29 days and 12 hours) and the actual lunar cycle (29 days, 12 hours, 44 minutes and 2.8 seconds). It offers two indications for the moon; one for the Northern hemisphere and one for the Southern hemisphere. The display is complemented by rose gold detailing.
Manufactured by the Parmigiani Fleurier dial production unit, the face of the Tonda Retrograde Annual Calendar is available in either silver or charcoal gray and features a delicate grained decoration or a barley grain in the center and a black or silvered opaline ring. The case is available in rose gold or white gold and is also manufactured at Parmigiani. This new timepiece is finished with a Hermès alligator strap. The suggested retail price is $32,800, and the images below may be enlarged with a click. Additional technical information appears below the images.
