New York Timers: The New Hamilton Broadway Collection

The musical “Hamilton” is the biggest draw on Broadway these days, and as serendipity would have it, the newest timepiece collection from Hamilton Watch Co. (no relation to either the play or its historical subject) is called Broadway. Comprising three models with three distinct movements, the collection draws its design inspiration from the New York City skyline and the streets of its famed Theater District.

The Hamilton Broadway wristwatches are, the company says, a nod to the Hamilton brand’s American roots and derives its name from the very first series of Hamilton pocketwatches, called Broadway Limited, released in the 1890s. The three watches that usher in the new collection are a Day-Date in a 40-mm case with a quartz movement and two models with automatic mechanical movements: a Day-Date in a 42-mm case and a chronograph in a 43-mm case.

The cases are steel, while the dials all have a sleek pattern designed around vertical lines that are intended to evoke the streets running between the skyscrapers on Manhattan’s famous grid. All the watches have anthracite gray inner rings that echo the city’s asphalt avenues. The skyscraper motif also finds its way into the shape of the hour and minute hands, while another prominent vertical line appears as an embossed ridge in the center of the stitched leather straps. Each watch has a red-tipped central seconds hand that provides a subtle contrast with the gray and silver tones. The cases have twin-faceted lugs, with polished and satin finishes, and diamond-polished bezels.

The Hamilton Broadway Day Date Quartz has a day and date display in a dual window at 3 o’clock, while the Day Date Auto (which contains Hamilton’s H30 automatic caliber with an 80-hour power reserve) has a more unconventional display with the day and date stacked at 6 o’clock. The Broadway Auto Chrono is equipped with Caliber H-21, which supplies 60 hours of power reserve and includes a chronograph with a 30-minute counter at 12 o’clock, 12-hour counter at 6 o’clock, small seconds at 9 o’clock, and day-date display at 3 o’clock. The chronograph also sports a tachymeter scale on the bezel.

All the Hamilton Broadway watches have applied hour indices, sapphire crystals with nonreflective coating, and Super-LumiNova on the hands. Each model is available on a black leather strap or on a steel bracelet with steel triple folding clasp. Prices are $595 (on strap) and $645 (on bracelet) for the Day-Date Quartz; $995 (strap) and $1,045 (bracelet) for the Day Date Auto; and $1,895 (strap) and $1,945 (bracelet) for the Auto Chrono.

  1. Love the day date model on leather strap. I purchased it at NYC while hosted in Broadway Av. It´s much more beatiful than the photos.

  2. Yesterday, December 7th, I purchased the Broadway automatic on a strap. The dial is remarkably good, with THREE different looks, predicated on the light. All dark black, black center surrounded by vertical textured thin lines from the twelve to six, or the same but with a light grey hue. The day and date windows can actually be seen, and one day later, the watch is keeping perfect time. In person viewing is critical, Pricing is wallet-thickness dependent.
