JeanRichard Highlands Big Life Limited Edition

JeanRichard Highlands Big Life frontJeanRichard, the watch brand named for 17th-century Swiss watchmaker Daniel JeanRichard, has released a limited edition of its sporty Highlands model in collaboration with the Big Life Foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve the fauna and ecosystem of Africa. Created in 2010 by British photographer Nick Brandt, who specializes in intimate portraits of animals of the African savannah, the Foundation is a response to a dramatic rise in poaching across Africa, and focuses much of its efforts on the vast Amboseli region, which straddles Kenya and Tanzania, home to one of the largest elephant populations on the continent.

The watch, of which only 100 pieces will be made, was introduced at the 2012 SIHH watch fair in Geneva. It has a sandblasted stainless steel case coated with black PVD, along with a green-tinted outer rotating bezel, which is used to indicate a second time zone. The matte black dial features Arabic numerals coated with ivory-colored luminescent material and a red “ Big Life ” signature above the 6 o’clock position. The sapphire caseback is highlighted by an elephant transfer, an emblem inspired by both the foundation’s logo and one of Brandt’s most iconic photos. The watch’s in-house movement, automatic Caliber JR1000, is visible through the caseback. The black fabric strap with black-PVD steel folding buckle lends the watch a rugged look.

Brandt’s input on the technical design of the Highlands Big Life is evident in the choices of materials, finishes, and colors: all have been chosen to minimize reflections, making the watch ideal for outdoor use, specifically by a photographer on a safari. If you can hunt down one of these elusive timepieces, it will cost you $5,275.
