Blancpain Villeret Chronographe Pulsomètre

Blancpain Villeret Chronographe PulsometreDoctors and other medical professionals will appreciate the newest watch in Blancpain’s elegant Villeret collection. The Blancpain Villeret Chronographe Pulsomètre is not only equipped with a flyback chronograph function but also includes, for the first time in a Blancpain watch, a pulsometer display for checking heart rates.

This new Blancpain Villeret watch also boasts a brand-new, automatic movement, made in-house at Blancpain’s manufacture in Le Brassus, Switzerland. At a diameter of 13 lignes, this caliber is perfectly fitted to the 43.6-mm-diameter rose-gold case. The movement’s balance beats at a brisk frequency of 36,000 vph, another first for Blancpain. It comprises 322 parts, including a silicon balance spring, and is equipped with a vertical clutch as well as a column-wheel chronograph mechanism. The chronograph includes a useful flyback function, which enables the user to instantly reset and restart the stopwatch simply by pressing the pusher at 4 o’clock, thus making it easier to record successive intervals of time.

The highlight of the Blancpain Villeret Chronographe Pulsometre is its pulsometer scale, which surrounds the outer periphery of the dial. In the low-tech age in which the pulsometer was devised, taking a pulse involved a 60-second measurement during which the number of beats had to be exactly counted. Doctors and nurses used chronograph timepieces with pulsometers to take their patients’ pulses more quickly. The chronograph hand ticking along the specially graduated scale made it possible to display the patient’s heartbeat directly on the watch’s dial without the need for calculations. To accurately indicate the number of heartbeats per minute on the pulsometer scale, simply start the chronograph and then stop it after counting off 30 heartbeats.

As with other models in Blancpain’s Villeret collection, the Chronograph Pulsomètre comes with a curved, white Grand Feu enamel dial. The Roman numerals are enamel-painted, the chronograph counter subdials are nicely balanced in the dial’s center (30-minute counter a 3 o’clock and 12-hour counter at 9 o’clock), while the date appears in a window at 6 o’clock. The movement is visible through the sapphire caseback, showing off such decorative elements as its gold rotor, which is adorned with a honeycomb motif. The Blancpain Villeret Chronographe Pulsomètre comes on a brown alligator leather strap.

Blancpain Villeret Chronographe Pulsometre - frontI had the opportunity to try on the Villeret Chronographe Pulsometre at a Blancpain-sponsored luncheon. Below is a live shot showing how it looks on the wrist. I expect, for some collectors, this is a watch that will get some pulses racing.
