Alpina Extreme Diver 300 Orange

Alpina Extreme Diver 300 OrangeThe color orange has long been recognized by many professional divers as the most visible deep underwater, hence its use on many professional-grade diving watches. So it only made sense that Swiss sport-watch brand Alpina would release a divers’ model with prominent orange elements. That new watch, which debuted at Baselworld, is called the Alpina Extreme Diver 300 Orange.

The watch is actually available in two versions: one with an automatic, mechanical movement in a 44-mm diameter case and the other with a quartz movement in a “midsize” 38-mm case, aimed more at ladies. (Click on photos to enlarge images.)

In both of its incarnations, the Extreme Diver 300 Orange has been developed with professional divers in mind: the steel case is water resistant to a depth of 300 meters (1,000 ft) and includes a screw-down crown and screw-down caseback. The polished, jet black diving bezel rotates in one direction and has luminous bezel markers indicating 60 minutes of dive time. Both models have a sapphire crystal treated with nonreflective coating.

Other shared features include the matte black dial and white luminous indexes. The bright white minute hand is outlined with luminous orange, and the seconds hand has Alpina’s signature triangle, also in orange, as its counterweight. Both watches have a large, three-day date display at the 3 o’clock position.

The automatic version of the Alpina Extreme Diver 300 Orange, Ref. AL-525, contains the self-winding AL-525 movement, with a 38-hour power reserve, which is visible through an exhibition caseback. The watch comes with a choice of either a rubber strap, steel bracelet, or metal mesh strap, each with a securely folding clasp. The Extreme Diver 300 Automatic comes in a specially designed gift box shaped like a diving bottle, which also includes an extra “swimsuit” nylon strap. Prices for the watch are $1,495 on the rubber strap and $1,695 on the bracelet.

The quartz movement in the “midsize” model, Ref. AL-240, has a 45-months battery life. Instead of an exhibition caseback to showcase the movement, that watch has an engraved caseback with a diving theme;  it is available with either a rubber strap or steel bracelet.
