Earlier this year, we reported on the Moritz Grossmann Corner Stone collection that was released during the brand’s Tokyo stopover. Prior to that, Moritz Grossmann had released an additional new model while visiting Dubai. That first watch, announced in late January, bears the distinction of being the German brand’s first timepiece equipped with a second time-zone display and is placed within the firm’s ATUM collection.
The ATUM GMT approaches the concept of travel-time in a fairly straightforward capacity. Home time is displayed through a traditional 12-hour display with the hour and minutes hand located on the central axis. Rather than incorporate a third hand to display a second time zone on the same axis, Moritz Grossmann has instead laid out a 24-hour ring with Arabic numerals that runs around the periphery of the main dial. A separate marker in the form of an arrow moves around the 24-hour display to show the second time zone. This second indicator is controlled via a setting crown at 10 o’clock that allows the arrow to be quickly adjusted in hourly increments both backward and forward without engaging with the primary timekeeping function on the 12-hour center display. This is enabled through a ratchet wheel with a ratchet spring that allows for the arrow to be adjusted at any time in hourly gearshifts.
The movement used here is Moritz Grossmann Caliber 100.8 that is visible through a sapphire crystal exhibition caseback and offers up to 42 hours of power reserve. You’ll find a 2/3-plate with raised gold chatons, the Grossmann ratchet, the separately removable winding unit with pusher mechanism and the cantilevered balance cock with a micrometer screw, as well as the mass-optimized balance. The GMT functionality is integrated into the movement on the dial side. The 24-hour display is transmitted via the hour wheel of the center time to another hour wheel and an intermediate wheel to the ring of the second time zone. Finally, a small seconds dial with subtle snailing is located in the customary 6 o’clock position.
Moritz Grossmann has released the new ATUM GMT in three different references. Ref. MG-002154 comes in a rose-gold case with am argenté-colored dial; Ref. MG-002225 comes in a white-gold case with an argenté-colored dial; and Ref. MG-002155 comes in a white-gold case with a champagne-colored dial. In each of the 41-mm versions, the numerals on the 24-hour scale are in blue with the matching arrow indicator. The lance-shaped hour and minute hands are handcrafted in the Moritz Grossmann manufactory and annealed to a dark brown color in Ref. MG-002154 and Ref. MG-002155; in Ref. MG-002225, the central hands are made of polished stainless steel. Pricing is not fully confirmed but you can expect it to land around $30,000 for each of the three models.
