Sotheby’s autumn sale of Important Watches on Sunday November 13 in Geneva will be spearheaded by the “Clarin Mustad 1518” – a unique Patek Philippe reference 1518 perpetual calendar chronograph that is estimated to sell for between $890,000 and $1,330,000. The sale also includes two Rolex wristwatches that belonged to leaders of the post-World War II era.

Patek Philippe collectors will want to keep an eye on Lot 30 at the Only Watch 2011 auction. This Ref. 3939 is a unique manually-wound minute repeater and tourbillon in a 33.3mm diameter stainless steel case with interchangeable solid and sapphire crystal case backs. A Patek Philippe Ref. 2499R, 3rd Series, brought $1,210,466 at Christie’s May 30 Hong Kong sale. The perpetual calendar chronograph with moon phases in pink gold was manufactured in 1971. A Skymoon tourbillon Ref. 5002P with twelve complications manufactured in 2008 brought $1,164,008. Both sales were within pre-sale estimates.

Awards Presented in Patek Philippe Artisanship and Precision Competition

On April 14 and 15 this year, 18 students from six Swiss watchmaking schools took part in the second Patek Philippe Artisanship and Precision Competition. The winners were honored on May 28, 2011, during a celebration at the Patek Philippe Museum in the presence of Patek Philippe President Thierry Stern as well as Robert Anguenot and Daniel Rochat.

Christie’s Achieves World Record Price for Any Rolex Sold at Auction

Rolex broke through the magic $1 million mark at Christie’s Geneva auction held at the Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues where an oversized stainless steel split seconds chronograph wristwatch manufactured in 1942 sold for $1,163,340 including the buyer’s premium. This is the all-time high price paid for any Rolex at auction.

Patek has also endowed a research chair dedicated to the application of new micro and nanotechnologies to watchmaking.

Patek Philippe has opened a new production center in Le Brassus, near the heart of the Vallée de Joux. The building houses three specialty workshops: Watchmaking, Fine Watchmaking and Restoration. Watchmaking specializes in setting up Patek Philippe perpetual calendar modules. The Fine Watchmaking workshop assembles, finishes, cases up, and sets the strikes for automatic winding minute repeaters. The Restoration workshop repairs and restores complicated timepieces.

Pocket Watch Estimated at $40K-$60K Brings $242,500

When the hammer came down on lot 79 at Christie’s December 14 New York auction, an unassuming Patek Philippe pocket watch with a pre-sale estimate of $40,000 to $60,000 had reached $242,500. The watch, manufactured in 1913, received a Geneva Observatory rating certificate in 1920 and was delivered to its American retailer in 1921. In 1925, it was purchased by American super-collector Henry Graves.
