Baselworld 2014: New Rolex GMT-Master II with “Pepsi” Bezel

Traditionalists rejoice: the GMT Master with a red and blue “Pepsi” bezel – the watch that graced the wrists of the Concorde test pilots - is back, and it's better than ever. Bringing it back wasn’t as easy. The new bezel is as much a technological feat as it is a return of an aesthetic icon. The complex process for creating Cerachrom bezels, and some basic rules of chemistry, conspired to make the rebirth a challenging process.   … [Read more...]

Piaget Altiplano 900P - front

For more than half a century Switzerland’s Piaget has specialized in manufacturing ultra-thin mechanical watches and watch movements. Now it has produced what it says is “the thinnest mechanical watch ever.” The new Piaget Altiplano 900P has a total case thickness of 3.65 mm, 9.9 percent less than the thinnest mechanical watch currently on the market, the 4.05-mm-thin Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Ultra-Thin Jubilee. … [Read more...]

Hydromechanical Horology: Inside the New HYT H1

HYT H1 PVD side

One of the most talked-about timepieces of the 2012 Baselworld watch fair was the HYT H1, an unusual-looking watch that indicates the time by means of two liquids — one green, one clear — that flow through a tiny tube along a peripheral hours scale. WatchTime technical editor Mike Disher explores the technology behind the watch and its movement, and we provide wallpaper images, prices, and an informative video. … [Read more...]

Concord C1 Vintage Chronograph

Angular, functional, faded jeans for the wrist. The C1 Vintage stainless steel case receives a blue PVD coating, giving it a deep gunmetal color. Then it's placed in a vibrating drum along with deburring chips, water and a detergent compound and subjected to over two hours of friction and rotation. The result is a shotblasted patina that mimics years of wear. Add a distressed leather strap and you've got a great looking mean blue time machine. … [Read more...]

Concord C1 MecaTech Chronograph

The Concord C1 MecaTech chronograph presents a study in multi-level dial complexity. Every square millimeter offers a line, a texture, a non-traditional display, or a new elevation. A matte-black grid in the center of the dial provides the base for the arrow pointers that rest above the turning disks of the 30 minute and 12 hour counters. … [Read more...]

Concord C1 Eternal Gravity

Concord might have dubbed this unique piece the Time Warp. Just looking at it transports me back a few years to those giddy days of carefree spending. I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that the $1.2 million C1 Eternal Gravity was not created with the U.S. market in mind. As we all know, the watch words here (pun intended) are sensible, rational, and reasonably priced. … [Read more...]

The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly: Watch Company Financial Results for 2009

For the most part, the Great Recession of 2009 pretty much mugged corporate sales and profits. In the watch sector, for example, the Bulgari and Movado groups reported red ink for the year. But there were exceptions to the battered sales and profits syndrome. Fossil, for one, had its most profitable year ever. Here’s a survey of the full-year results of publicly traded firms who are watch industry players. … [Read more...]

What Are These Guys Up To?

TechnoMarine made a big splash a decade ago. A new team is hoping to do it again. The image of (left to right) Christian Viros, Vincent Perriard, and Steven Cohen, nearly up to their necks in water, is designed to make us wonder what these three bobbing Pep Boys are up to. The image is apt because that’s exactly the question lots of people in the watch world are asking. … [Read more...]
