A platinum Patek Philippe ref. 3974 with three dials sold for a record $1.2 million on December 9 at Antiquorum’s 35th Anniversary year-end sale in New York. A Patek ref. 5101P Ten Days Tourbillon retailed by Tiffany & Co. brought $295,200, and a Patek ref. 3450 with rare display-back case achieved $270,000. A Rolex ref. 1665 Double-Red Sea Dweller owned by famous diver Patrice Chemin sold for an extraordinary $162,000 – six times the presale estimate.

On December 9 at its New York City headquarters, Antiquorum will auction over 400 timepieces, and the star of the show will be a platinum Patek Philippe ref. 3974 minute repeater perpetual calendar with 2 additional dials. This watch was produced in 1999 and this is only the fourth time in 10 years this reference will be offered at auction. An extract from the Patek Philippe archives is included.

A Patek Philippe Caliber 89 sold for $5,042,000 (SFr.5,120,000) at Antiquorum’s 35th Anniversary sale held November 14 and 15 at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Geneva. The selling price exceeded the pre-sale estimate of 4.5 to 5 million Swiss francs. Patek created 4 examples of the Caliber 89 in 1989 to mark the company’s 150th anniversary. This example is in yellow gold.

With 33 complications, this is the world’s most complicated timepiece.

Patek World Records at Antiquorum’s New York Sale

490 internet bidders joined an SRO crowd in the auction room at Antiquorum’s New York sale on September 17, and in the end two Patek Philippe references took top honors, bringing world record prices. The sale of 414 rare and important timepieces generated $9,214,074, representing 85% sold by lot and 133% sold by value. Breguet, Jaeger-LeCoultre, Blancpain, Cartier, and Seiko also made strong showings.

Antiquorum’s Auction Season Ends With a Bang

A standing-room only crowd at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel competed against more than 250 internet bidders from over 40 countries at Antiquorum’s 2009 Hong Kong auction. The sale brought a total of HKD 45,453,120 ($5,864,199). 82% of the 479 lots offered were sold, representing 115% of the estimated value. The top price was paid for a rare Patek Philippe Ref. 3974 made in 1990. The astronomic, minute-repeating, self-winding, 18K yellow gold wristwatch with perpetual calendar, leap year indication and moon phases achieved HKD 3,000,000 ($387,049).

Steve McQueen’s Rolex Brings Record $234,000

Steve McQueen’s Rolex Submariner Ref. 5512 brought $234,000 including buyer’s premium at Antiquorum’s summer sale in New York City yesterday, setting a world record for that reference. Another McQueen item, his Scott Super Squirrel motorcycle painted by Von Dutch brought the highest bid of the day at $276,000. The Heuer Monaco McQueen wore during the 1971 filming of Le Mans far exceeded the pre-sale estimate, selling for $87,600.

Antiquorum’s Geneva Sale Brings World Record

Antiquorum’s May 10 Geneva sale realized SFr. 6,520,180. Of the 331 lots, 80% were sold, representing 134.62% in value. A Patek Philippe Ref. 1436 (lot 161) brought the highest price of the day. The stainless steel split-seconds chronograph, one of only two stainless steel split-seconds watches known to exist, sold to a European collector for a world-record SFr. 1,244,800 after fierce in room and telephone bidding.

Antiquorum’s May Sale Includes Patek 1436, 5016

On May 9 and 10 Antiquorum will auction over 300 watches and clocks at the Grand Hotel Kempinski in Geneva. The highlight of the sale is a Patek Philippe Ref. 1436, stainless steel split-seconds chronograph, pictured below. This piece is one of four known examples of which three survived, and one of only two first generation watches known to exist. This timepiece was produced in 1945 and sold on May 11, 1949. It is the first time ever that this watch will be offered at auction. The pre-sale estimate is SFr. 600,000 to 800,000.
