Birth of the TAG Heuer Carrera

If you own a TAG Heuer Carrera, or aspire to one day, you’ll want to explore the origins of this most recognizable of TAG Heuer’s men’s sports watches.

  • Did you know that the name of the TAG Heuer Carrera sprang from a casual conversation with a famous racecar driver in 1963?
  • Did you know that it was the TAG Heuer Carrera that led Jack Heuer to a friendship with Enzo Ferrari?
  • Did you know that TAG Heuer’s relationship with professional racing extended to the timing system used in Formula 1 world championships for nine years?

This dedication to the precise, accurate timing of racing events is what drove Jack Heuer to create the TAG Heuer Carrera. Discover how Jack Heuer, a racing enthusiast himself, came to invent these timing devices, and how his genius and business acumen led TAG Heuer to be the first to recognize the promise of electronic watches.

The 1980s, economic recession and the Formula 1

Another of many TAG Heuer watches to become a collectible, the TAG Heuer Formula 1 was born from the company’s close association with the legendary racing organization. And yet it took a near economic disaster to give birth to the first Formula 1.

TAG Heuer Watches: The True Story behind the TAG Heuer Carrera, TAG Heuer Formula 1 and Others takes the reader through the hard times of the 1970s and ‘80s, when digital stopwatches and the quartz analog movement grew in popularity. The U.S. dollar tumbled in value, making Swiss luxury watches too costly to survive the recession.

Yet despite all that, you’ll learn how Jack Heuer was among the first watch executives to understand the value of California’s new microelectronics industry … how he pressed forward regardless … and how he eventually left the watch industry just as the new TAG Heuer company introduced one of its most popular men’s sports watches, the TAG Heuer Formula 1.

The Formula 1, named after the one thing that the TAG (Techniques d’Avante-Garde) and Heuer companies had in common before their merger, was a huge success and still is today. The company’s luxury divers’ watch, the TAG Heuer Aquaracer, is a direct descendant. If you’re a fan of men’s sports watches, Swiss luxury watches and especially TAG Heuer watches, why not read TAG Heuer Watches: The True Story behind the TAG Heuer Carrera, TAG Heuer Formula 1 and Others right now to fully understand the lore and the history of this popular line?

Somewhat wrongfully, I still regard TAG Heuer as more of a marketing company than a watch maker. My reasons for this view include the facts that TAG Heuer still relies on third parties to manufacture most of its movements, its in house movements are hand me downs from Zenith and Seiko, and it does not disclose the manufacture of many of its movements. For example, I still do not know if the Calibre 5 is made by ETA, Sellita, or someone else, and TAG doesn’t disclose this in its materials. For all of its similar problems, at least Baume and Mercier fully discloses the manufactures of its movements in its literature.
