Today, Austrian skydiver and Zenith brand ambassador Felix Baumgartner (not to be confused with the watchmaker Felix Baumgartner of Urwerk fame) became the first man to break the speed of sound in a freefall after jumping from the edge of space, 39,045 meters high (the record will be officially certified at a later date). He reached a max speed of 1,342.8 km (Mach 1.24) in the vacuum-like stratosphere before being slowed by the atmosphere. Joining him on the historic jump was the new Zenith El Primero Stratos Flyback Striking 10th chronograph, which also achieved its own record: the jump will make it the first watch to break the sound barrier in a near-space environment. Zenith also served as the official timekeeper for the mission.
