As we’ve already informed you in our pre-SIHH item about IWC’s new Ingenieur Racer Chronograph, IWC is all-Ingenieur, all the time in 2013, teaming up with the Mercedes AMG racing team to revamp its masculine, octagonal-cased sports watch line and adding a number of new models. IWC’s booth is customarily one of the must-sees of the SIHH, with previous versions reflecting the aviation theme of the Big Pilot’s line and the nautical theme of the Aquatimer, among others. This year’s was a sleek take on an actual Mercedes AMG racing team garage, with actual automotive technology displays and actual AMG cars including both an antique worth millions at auction and the modern-day IWC-sponsored Mercedes AMG race car.
The fleet of new Ingeniuer watches included three new models with 40-mm cases (both the case and bracelet are smaller than the existing models’, reflecting more closely the size of the original Ingenieur from the 1970s) with new double-locking clasps and a very friendly price point of $6,600 each.
Among the others are another Ingenieur Racing Chrono with a titanium case and metallic dial (which I’m wrist-modeling below); two limited-edition “Silberpfeil” models (1,000 pieces each), named for a classic Mercedes race car with an engraved illustration of the car on the case back; a dual-time-zone model; the AMG Black Series (with a case and bezel made of black zirconium oxide, a high-tech ceramic used in the automotive industry); the Carbon Performance model (an IWC boutique exclusive, which might represent the use of full carbon fiber for the case, bezel, and dial of a watch; and my personal highlight, the AMG Digital Perpetual Calendar (also below), with a case made of another auto-industry material, titanium aluminide, which is even lighter than standard titanium and more resistant to heat. It’s a perpetual calendar (which also includes a chronograph) that truly looks like it sprang from a car’s dashboard.
Keep watching WatchTime.com for extensive coverage of the new Ingenieur models and the brand’s relationship worth Mercedes AMG racing. And keep checking out the WatchTime SIHH blog throughout the week for more news and images from the halls of Geneva’s world-famous watch fair.
