F. A. Lange Watchmaking Excellence Award 2012

p150A few months ago, we reported on A. Lange & Söhne sponsoring the F.A. Lange Excellence Award, which involved eight young watchmakers from around the world competing for a prize of 10,000 euros by creating a date display based on an ETA 6498 movement. On December 6, the winners were finally announced. For the first time, there were two runners-up instead of one winner. Bennie R. L. Hernandez (24) from Texas and Daniel Neugebauer (29) from Munich each received 5,000 Euros in prize money for their date-display constructions. A. Lange & Söhne founder Walter Lange and Lange CEO Wilhelm Schmid presented the awards to both young watchmakers at a press event in Dresden.

The participants were given four months to create a fully functioning date display. Points were given based on originality, innovation, functionality, technical prowess, craftsmanship, as well aesthetic qualities. As there was no clear winner in all categories, the jury decided to award two joint second prizes for two designs that stood out for their originality and attention to detail.
