The Baselworld watch fair, essentially the Super Bowl for watch aficionados and the media that cover the industry, officially kicks off tomorrow. However, members of the worldwide press, including WatchTime, were invited a day early to attend brand press conferences, preview new products, and get a glimpse of the new, larger Baselworld exhibition hall, along with 1,000 newly redesigned brand booths.
Rolex is among the many brands that have expanded their Baselworld booths in the new. larger Baselworld exhibition halls. The renovation took five years of planning and three of construction.
Breitling’s expanded booth still includes the gigantic aquarium that has become a favorite Baselworld attraction over the years for visitors.
The Swatch Group is an even larger presence at this year’s show, with many brands, including Omega, expanding their booth space.
Master watchmaker Christophe Claret showed his new timepiece, the Kantharos, which combines a monopusher chronograph with a sonnerie repeater and a constant-force escapement.
Hublot’s “masterpiece” for 2013 is the Hublot La Ferrari, a 50-piece limited edition with an unprecedented 50-day power reserve, courtesy of no less than 11 spring barrels.
Tudor, the “more affordable” sister brand of Rolex, returns to the U.S. this summer. The first new model available in the States will be the Tudor Heritage Chrono Blue, a sporty model with a maritime color scheme based on the original from 1973.
The other new Tudor model is the Fastrider Black Shield, a matte-black-and-red model inspired by Ducati motorcycles. The case is scratch-resistant ceramic and the hands and indices have a red luminous coating. There is also a version with bronze details and an alcantara strap.
